Ethiopian Wildlife

The Ethiopian Highlands are a unique and biodiverse region, home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife. Two standout species are the Ethiopian wolf and the Gelada baboon.

The Ethiopian wolf is one of the rarest canids globally and is endemic to the highlands. It’s known for its striking red coat and slender appearance. These wolves are highly specialized hunters, primarily preying on small mammals like rodents.

Gelada baboons are often referred to as “bleeding-heart baboons” because of the red patch of skin on their chests. They are the only primates that primarily graze on grass. Watching a large troop of Gelada baboons peacefully grazing in the highlands is a captivating sight.

The Ethiopian Highlands themselves are a unique ecosystem with distinct flora and fauna, making them a region of global ecological importance. They are a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers interested in exploring the beauty and diversity of Ethiopia’s natural world.
